Located in the center of the ancient city of Lhasa, the Jokhang Monastery was built in the seventh century (647A.D.) by Songtsen Gampo and his two wives: the Tang Princess Wencheng and Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti. The original structure was small. During the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama, large scale reconstruction and renovation took place. The temple demonstrates a combination of the Han, Tibetan, Indian and Nepalese architectural styles, as well as a man-made world outlook of Buddhism. The Jokhang Temple is the spiritual center of Tibet, the Holy of Holies, the destination of millions of Tibetan pilgrims. It houses many invaluable cultural relics. The most sacred item is the sculpture of Jowo Sakyamuni aged 12, which Princess Wencheng brought from Chang'an (Now Xian) 1,300 years ago. It is one of the very few sculptures of its kind making it even more precious.
