  • Lhokha, known as Shannan Prefecture, is located at the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River south of the Kangdese Mountains, enjoying a comparatively mild climate. It is bounded by the capital city Lhasa to the north, Shigatse to the west, Nyingchi to the east and India and Bhutan to the south. It covers an area of 73,500 square kilometers, occupying one-fifteenth of the total area of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Lhokha Prefecture, known as the birthplace of the Tibetan people, is one of the most prosperous parts in Tibet and has the longest history in Tibet. The well-known Tubo Regime was derived from the agricultural civilization in Lhokha. Nowadays, there are 12 counties in this region with a total population of 290,000, including Tibetan, Han, Hui, Monba and Lhoba people. The Prefectural Party Committee and Prefectural Government are located in Tsetang Town, which is the political, economic, cultural and transport center of this prefecture.
