  • Shigatse Travel Guide
  • Shigatse is the second biggest and the only county- level city in Tibet. Located in the alluvial plain at the confluence of Brahmaputra and Nianchuhu rivers, it is an ancient city in the altiplano with a history of nearly 600 years. This city is connected to several surrounding countries and other cities of Tibet. It has a population of 820,000 and most of them were farmers or herdsmen. Tibetans make over 95% of the population with Han Chinese, making the majority of the rest along with 15 other minorities. Around one quarter of Tibet's population lives in Shigatse along the Yarlung Zangbo River.
  • The city is located between the Himalayas and the Kangdese-Nyainqentanglha Mountain Ranges. The average elevation of the city is 4,000 meters. The Himalayas is the youngest and highest mountain range in the world and one can witness its enormous beauty from Shigatse. The upper southern Tibetan basin is home to the largest grain production area in Shigatse and consists of two areas, the Larze-Rinbung Valley and Gyangtse-Shigatse Plain. These and other plains form the major farming areas in the city. When traveling to Tibet, Shigatse is a place that offers very many different aspects of Tibetan life and a must see tourist destination.
