Tombs of Tibetan Kings

Tombs of Tibetan Kings Tour

The largest group of known Tombs of Tibetan Kings was located on Mure Mountain at the southern bank of the Yarlung Zangbo River, southwest of the Zongsam Mountain and beside the Yarlung River. Surrounded by open ground and benefiting from moderate weather, rich soil, and beautiful landscape, this area with its favorable natural conditions was the birthplace of the ancient Tibetan nationality and the old home of the founding King, Songtsen Gambo. These variably sized earthen structures are the tombs of Tibetan kings who governed from the 7th to the 9th century. Originally of similar size and shape-high and square with flat top-some of the tombs are now round or otherwise eroded. Scattered all over Mure Mountain, nine recognizable mausoleums cover an area of 3 square kilometers.
Similarly shaped, they were all high, square earth heaps with flat tops of piled stone and pecked earth, imitating the early tomb styles of central China. But now, after over a thousand years of wind and weather, their characteristics have changed; some have become rounded and flat on top. The Tombs of Tibetan Kings that we can see today is 2,076 meters long and 1,407 meters wide, with an area of about 3.06 million square meters. According to historical documents and inscriptions on the memorial tablets, some Tombs of Tibetan Kings occupants such as Songtsen Gampo, Manshongman Tomb, Hedezhuzhan Tomb,Trisong Detsen, Tride Songsten, Lang Darma have been identified.
