Tsetang Town

Tsetang Town Tour

Tsetang is located in the southeast of Lhasa, just south of the Tsangpo River, and nearby valleys of Yarlung and Chongye. An important Chinese administrative centre and army base, Tsetang (Zedang) is the fourth-largest city in Tibet and the capital of huge Shannan (Lhoka) prefecture. For travellers, Tsetang is of interest mainly as a jumping board for exploration of the Yarlung Valley. The town is also the starting point for a trip to Lhamo Lhatso, a sacred lake 115 km northeast of Tsetang. It is said that visions on the surface of the water contains prophecies. Tsetang is divided into a characterless modern Chinese town and a small traditional Tibetan town, clustered to the east around Gangpo Ri.
The former dzong and village of Nedong has been subsumed into Tsetang's southern suburbs. Legend tells that the first Tibetans originated on the slopes of Gongpo Ri to the east of Tsetang, and that the Yarlung Valley was where the first King of Tibet descended from the heavens to earth upon a sky-cord. It is very convenient to transport from Lhasa to Tsetang. However, there is no public transport in the Yarlung and Chongye Valleys.
