Yumbulagang Palace is situated on the summit of the Jormo Zhaxi Ceri Mountain on the east bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, about eight kilometers from the south of Tsetang Town. Yumbulagang, "palace of mother and son" in Tibetan dialect, is the first palace and one of the earliest buildings in Tibet and it has a history of more than 2,000 years. It was said that the palace was built for the first King Nyatri Tsanpo by Bon believers in the second century B.C.. Later, it became the summer palace of Songtsen Gampo and his wife: Princess Wencheng from Tang Dynasty. Yumbulagang is mainly divided into two parts: the front part is multi-layer palace, while the back part is a square watchtower of a high blockhouse. The watchtower is the highest point of Yumbulagang. It is said that Princess Wencheng spent her first summer there.
