  • Mt. Everest, mountain peak in the Himalayas of southern Asia, the highest mountain in the world, is located at the border between China and Nepal, about 100 kilometers far away from the Sino-Nepal Road. Its North Slope belongs to China and South belongs to Nepal. It was known as Peak XV until 1856, when it was named for Sir George Everest. Most Nepali people refer to the mountain as Sagarmatha, meaning "Forehead in the Sky". Tibetan languages speakers, including the Sherpa people of northern Nepal, consider it as Chomolungma, and Tibetan for "Goddess Mother of the World". The mountain is rising a few millimeters each year due to geological forces. Global Positioning System (GPS) has been installed on Mount Everest to detect the slight rates of the geological uplift. The peak has been a holy climbing attraction for world's mountaineers. More and more mountaineers start from the Everest Base Camp trying to conquer the world's highest peak while tourists trek to the foot of the peak to enjoy its beauty.
