Ngari, known as the "roof of the roof of the world" and the most "Tibetan" part of Tibet, is located in the western part of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, bordering India, Nepal and Indian Kashmir, and is contiguous with Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The total area of this region is 310, 000 sq. kilometers, accounting for one forth of Tibet. The Ngari Prefecture is made up by seven counties, Burang, Gar, Ge'gyai, Gerze, Choqen, Zhada and Rutog, which hold 30 districts, 106 townships, and 359 administrative villages. It is the place where the Himalayas, the Gangdise, the Kunlun Mountains and Karakorum Mountains meet. The area boasts of great mountains, beautiful lakes, vast grasslands and spectacular snow mountains. Mt Kailash is considered the spiritual center of Buddhism, Hinduism and the indigenous religion-Bon, and Lake Manasarova (Mapham Yutso) one of the "Holy Lakes" in Tibet.
